There used to be Slavonic fortified settlement in the 10th century. Jindrich I (Henry I) from Hradec established Roman-Gothic castle called Nova Domus on its place about 1220. The market place that emerged at the castle was developing rapidly and in 1293 become a fortified town. The name Jindrichuv Hradec started to be used in the Czech language in the 15th century. In the 16th century the town was growing very fast and become one of the largest Czech towns in the 17th century. It became an administrative town of the region and it was a crossroad of important trade routes connecting Bohemia with Austria. The period of stagnation came after 1620 the battle at Bila Hora (White Mountain), however, the town started to develop again in the 18th and 19th centuries with arrival of industrial production.
The most significant historical building is the 3rd largest chateau complex in the Czech Republic - the unique Renaissance chateau comprising Gothic palace with precious Gothic paintings and a rondelet of imposing architecture that became a place of frequent concerts due to its great acoustics.
The historical centre has mostly Empire style dated back after devastating fire in 1801. The highest building in the town is the Church of Virgin Mary and the 15th meridian is going through its corner. Kryzovy jeslicky - the biggest moving Bethlehem can be found in the local museum former Jesuit seminary. Another important sight is the Church of John the Baptist.
The important music festivals take place in Jindrichuv Hradec every year - Concertino Praga, festival of classical music and e.g. Folk Rose, festival of folk music.
